Ana Roxanne
Ana Roxanne grew up in the Bay Area surrounded by jazz, R&B and classical music — the local radio stations and her parents' record collection were her first education. After studying music in Iowa and throwing herself into a choral program that took her across the country, a trip to Uttarakhand, India, to learn Hindustani vocal techniques changed the way she thought about music entirely.
Back in California, she enrolled at Mills College in Oakland and started building her own sound. Her earliest recordings, collected on the EP '~~~', were passed around among friends in 2015 until Leaving Records reissued them in 2019, where they found a much wider audience.
In 2020 she signed to Kranky and released 'Because of a Flower', a debut that wove together dreampop, West Coast new age, trip-hop and classical music in a way that felt startlingly personal. The Guardian called it "a magical pop-ambient mirrorworld". A run of high-profile shows followed: Pitchfork Music Festival in London, Le Guess Who, Dekmantel, Rewire, Sydney's City Recital Hall and Glastonbury in 2024.
Her second album, 'Poem 1', is perhaps her most unguarded work yet. Decelerated jazz, minimalism, vocal folk and dissociated synthesizer drones, all shaped by a period of heartbreak and grief. Resident Advisor described her sound as "introverted euphoria"; Pitchfork simply called it "ecstatic".
Alongside her solo work, she has composed music for Bernie Krause's project with the Fondation Cartier, collaborated with DJ Python on the Mexican Summer-released LP 'Natural Wonder Beauty Concept', and reworked a classic by Beverly Glenn-Copeland. Her next project is the score for 'First Light', an award-winning feature film by director James L. Robinson, due for release in 2026.
