La Rat
La Rat is a duo formed by Goya van der Heijden and Tobias Jansen, operating at the crossroads of experimental hip-hop, collage-based production, and free-form song structures. Their work draws from funk and soul foundations while folding in loops, samples, cut-up,s and fractured rap verses.
Released under the South Of North imprint, their debut LP (summer 2025) presents a series of tracks that blur genre boundaries, moving fluidly between beat-driven compositions and abstract sound constructions. La Rat’s music absorbs influences from psychedelia, blues and jazz, while referencing outsider figures such as Rammellzee and Pauline Oliveros, resulting in a language that feels both rooted and deliberately unstable.
Rather than adhering to traditional hip-hop formats, La Rat builds a self-contained universe where rhythm, voice, and texture interact freely. Their approach prioritises atmosphere and intuition over linear structures, placing their work firmly within the margins of contemporary experimental music.
